Description
Further InformationHead of a figurine, probably a Pan or Satyr or an actor with a mask. The facial features are particularly worn. The figure is probably wearing a mask and a wreath around the hair, so it is likely that is related to the theater.
The theatre was from early on a great inspiration and a favourite subject for all the forms of ancient Greek art. A special category of artefacts with very rich production are the clay theatrical figurines and masks. They have been found both in funerary contexts, in private and public buildings, in workshops, in streets, in sanctuaries, in theatres and in the surrounding areas. Stone and clay masks, as well as their depictions in pottery, give us an idea of the real objects, those worn by the performing actors.
